Book Review – Anything For Her by Jack Jordan

Anything for Her by Jack Jordan

The book blurb;

‘Sometimes the past comes back to haunt you.

Louise Leighton’s life has fallen apart, all because of one fateful night. Her husband is an adulterer, her sister is his mistress, and soon, Louise will lose everything she owns. But she never imagined she would lose her daughter.

Eighteen-year-old Brooke Leighton is missing. It’s up to Louise and the Metropolitan Police to find her. Has Brooke run away? Or has she been taken against her will? And can Louise aid the investigation without mentioning the night where all of her troubles began?

If she mentions that night, she will incriminate her daughter for heinous crimes. But if she doesn’t, she may never find Brooke; and if she has been abducted, the person who took her may come for Louise, too.

Sometimes the past comes back to kill you’

*I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review*

‘Anything For Her’ tells the story of Louise Leighton, her husband has revealed his affair and so she leaves the family home and heads out to their family holiday home in the countryside. While Louise is here strange things start happening; dead birds on the doorstep and her daughter Brooke is sure she is being followed…

This novel is paced so well and mystery of ‘that night’ runs throughout the book and this really keeps you guessing as to what happened. I was almost frustrated by the time the final reveal came. The consequences of ‘that night’ are far-reaching and have ruined Louise’s relationship with her husband and is starting to erode the relationship with her children.

I really liked Louise’s character, she is strong yet conflicted and this really comes through well within the novel. She is lost in her world and feels immense guilt over what happened on ‘that night’ and this informs all of her decisions. What the author has done is ensure that this character is consistent in her turmoil and is striving for her own freedom in order to gain some perspective and find some direction. Louise’s husband and youngest child are unaware of Louise’s secret and as such are bystanders when it some to detailing ‘that night’. They do however have their own voice within the novel and her husband’s is particularly interesting. He was a wealthy business owner who is facing embezzlement charges and his life is in a downward spiral. I really connected with him and bought into his character, I actually felt for him and could understand his perspective.

The relationships between the main characters are strained and this has a real effect on the reader, you can feel their confusion and their frustrations. The main tone within the book is sombre, the characters are all trying to wade their way through the murky waters of their current situation.

The tension builds throughout the novel and there are some genuinely frightening parts (I mean, who enters a derelict barn, alone, in the middle of the night?!) and will have your pulse racing. The disappearance of Brooke is dealt with in such a way that it is felt through the panic of her family instead of purely through her own eyes and this adds another dimension to the story-telling, this isn’t just fright, fright, kill. There is a reality to this novel that grips you and does not let you off lightly, I loved it!

This novel is a pure thriller, it sucks you in and spits you back out with a feeling of adrenaline-filled melancholy (I didn’t know that was possible either). The novel is fantastic and any reader who wants to be taken on a journey of mystery and intrigue will want to read this. I highly recommend it.
